Recent advances in the fields of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning are revolutionizing our economy and our society. AI-based systems are finding numerous applications in marketing, sales, healthcare, finances, education, transportation, logistics, design, and scientific research. Recent results obtained with transformer-based vision and language models have advanced our understanding of their inner workings and are creating the possibility of more explainable, more robust and more efficient systems. The rapidly developing reasoning abilities of these models have also expanded their range of applicability, leading us ever closer to the idea of Artificial General Intelligence (AGI). As these systems become ever more powerful and flexible, what will be the social, legal, and ethical implications?
Arlindo Oliveira is a distinguished professor at Instituto Superior Técnico (IST), University of Lisbon, and a distinguished guest professor at Macau University of Science and Technology. He serves as executive chairman of the Institute for Computer and Systems Engineering (INESC) group and a board member of Caixa Geral de Depósitos (CGD), Portugal's largest bank. He is a researcher with extensive experience in algorithm design, artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, and bioinformatics. He has authored five books, translated into multiple languages and has published over 250 conference and journal articles in the fields of algorithms, artificial intelligence, machine learning, bioinformatics, and computer architecture.
Arlindo Oliveira is the founder and principal investigator of the Machine Learning and Knowledge Discovery Group of INESC R&D. Besides, he has held positions as the President of Instituto Superior Técnico, chairman of INESC R&D (Institute for Systems and Computer Engineering, R&D in Lisbon), and president of the Portuguese Association for Artificial Intelligence (APPIA). He has received several awards and honors, including the 2009 Technical University of Lisbon / Santander Research Excellence Award, the 2024 GALP / Academy of Engineering Career Award and the 2024 Portuguese Association for the Digital Economy career award.
